Q –Do I really need an effluent filter?
A – An effluent filter helps prevent solids from carrying over to the leach field, protecting the life of your leach field. Effluent filters can be installed in existing systems and is required to be installed in new systems. Since the filter picks up solids it will need to be maintained and should be cleaned once a year. The filter can easily be cleaned by removing it from the outlet side of the tank and washing it back into the inlet side of the tank. Q –Does washing machine detergent harm my septic system
A – The volume of detergent from a washing machine entering a septic system is so low as to be very diluted when it enters the septic tank, it is diluted enough so that it will not do any harm to the septic tank bacteria. Spacing out washing times and use of liquid detergent in the recommended amounts will minimize the effects on your septic system.
Q – What type of household chemicals can I put down the toilet.
A – Normal diluted quantities for a modest household usage of ammonia, bleach and disinfectants. Pouring large amounts of these products including drain cleaning products, oils and other chemicals down your sink, bathtub or toilet will damage your septic system. Even cleaning paint brushes in the sink allows enough paint to travel to your tank and can impair its function.
Q – How often should I pump my septic tank.
A – Performing a sludge test is the best way to determine how often a tank should be pumped. A sludge test is performed by a service provider for around $50 with easy access to the septic tank. A general rule is to have your tank pumped every 3 -5 years. More information can be found at uri.edu/ce/wq/owt/index.htm |
